Federal authorities has entered the fray in a lawsuit initiated by California Republicans, seeking to halt the California's recently passed electoral boundaries.
This legal action, submitted to a US district court, challenges the map championed by Governor Gavin Newsom, which was developed in reaction against a Republican-led gerrymander in Texas.
"The state's redistricting scheme constitutes a brazen power grab that violates civil rights and undermines the electoral system," declared the US attorney general.
Democrats have voiced assurance that the new maps will withstand legal scrutiny.
"These opponents lost at the ballot box and they are likely to also lose in court," stated a representative for the governor.
Constitutional Challenge
The legal challenge claims that California's map improperly used race as a factor to heavily favor Hispanic voters in contravention of the US Constitution.
"It is unconstitutional to use race as a substitute to further partisan goals, but that is exactly what the state legislature did with the redistricting measure," argued a high-ranking representative from the DOJ's civil rights unit.
Political Context
The legal battle represents the most significant response by Democrats in the ongoing redistricting war that began in Texas and has extended to multiple states.
Unlike other states, where GOP-controlled legislatures have enacted gerrymanders, California's plan required public consent, which it obtained with nearly 65% of the vote.
National Implications
Democrats need to gain just a handful of Republican-held House seats to gain majority of the House of Representatives in next year's congressional elections.
The political group controlling the majority will influence the final years of the sitting president's term, determining whether a unified Republican Congress will continue to deliver its political program or encounter opposition, congressional probes and potential additional obstacles.
