RAF Typhoon FGR4s have conducted a mission with France's air force in a joint strike on an hidden munitions depot in Syrian territory employed by the IS group, according to the British defence ministry.

The site, pinpointed through surveillance, was assessed as housing weapons and explosive materials, the release indicated, and was situated in mountainous terrain just above Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"Our aircraft employed laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to target a number of entry passages down to the depot... preliminary assessments suggest the objective was successfully hit," the MoD said.

There was no evidence of any harm to civilians in the attack on Saturday evening and every plane involved returned to base without incident, the defence officials confirmed.

The Typhoon FGR4s were assisted by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

The Islamic State group - alternatively referred to as the so-called Islamic State - imposed extremist governance over parts of Syria and Iraq until 2019.

"This strike demonstrates British leadership, and resolve to operate in unison with allied nations, to stamp out any resurgence of the terrorist group and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the area," Britain's Defence Chief the Defence Secretary stated.

RAF aircraft have conducted surveillance missions over Syrian airspace to "deter any attempted comeback" of the group subsequent to its military defeat at the battle of Baghuz in the year 2019, the MoD reported.

"I extend gratitude to the personnel of British forces who took part in this mission for their professionalism and their courage," Healey commented. "They were part of thousands of UK service members on duty over the festive period. This action, to remove terrorist threats who threaten our safety, highlights how British military are ready to step up, all year round, protecting the UK at home and strong abroad."

Last December, the United States armed forces carried out what it described as a "major assault" targeting Islamic State objectives in the country, after an attack killed two US servicemembers and a civilian interpreter in Palmyra.

The United Nations says Islamic State still has roughly 5-7 thousand combatants in both countries.
