A recent study suggests that people who stop using blockbuster weight-loss injections like semaglutide or tirzepatide tend to recover shed pounds at a significantly accelerated pace than those who halt traditional diet and exercise programs.
Findings released in a leading medical journal demonstrates that while overweight individuals frequently drop a large proportion of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the mass is regained at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.
"People purchasing these treatments need to be cognizant of the danger of rapid rebound weight gain when the treatment is stopped," cautioned researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of regain means a reversion to starting mass in about 18 months.
Weighing Approaches
The research, which reviewed 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of participants, compared the results of GLP-1 agonists with conventional dieting.
Researchers point out that people who shed pounds through diet and exercise usually see a slower weight regain—around 100 grams monthly—after stopping.
The Reason for the Quick Regain
Nutrition scientists propose the mode of action of the drugs explains the amplified regain.
GLP-1 drugs copy a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which moderates hunger.
"Artificially providing the hormone levels several times higher than normal may cause the system to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous hormone, and could lessen sensitivity to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.
"Discontinuation of this hormone supplement leads to hunger is uncontrolled, making binge eating far more likely."
An Ongoing Issue?
Health authorities advise the injections for individuals with obesity-related medical conditions, accompanied by prescribed lifestyle changes.
Many experts say that, considering the high risk of relapse, the therapy might need to be life-long.
This opinion is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the findings "underscore the persistent nature of excess weight," comparing it to managing conditions like hypertension.
User Testimonies
People who have come off the medication report a powerful resurgence of cravings.
"It was like a switch that goes on and you become extremely hungry," said one woman.
This difficulty is exacerbated if users have not established permanent dietary or behavioural modifications during treatment.
Significant Adoption
Survey data suggest that a significant number of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the past year, with interest continuing to grow.
- Use is more common among females than males.
- The middle-aged age group shows the greatest usage rates.
- A large proportion obtain the drugs through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.
In conclusion, researchers caution that while GLP-1 drugs are effective tools for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent fix and maintained weight loss relies on integrated lifestyle support.
