‘Digital Eavesdropping’: Unilever Looks to Exploit Vaseline’s Viral TikTok Trend.
As a product discovered over 150 years ago on a Pennsylvania oilfield, the simple jar of Vaseline may not seem like an obvious target for social media algorithms.
Nonetheless, its ascent as a viral TikTok topic has placed it at the forefront of an promotional upheaval, where major corporations are allocating substantial funds to content creators and putting fewer resources into promoting products in traditional media.
The Path from Petroleum to Platforms
The petroleum jelly was first manufactured in the 1870s by chemist Robert Cheeseborough, who saw laborers using on their skin with a byproduct of the drilling process. Currently, a wave of user-generated videos have recorded its extensive utilization in “life hacks”.
Promoted as a solution for polishing footwear or making fragrance last longer, and also a remedy for noisy doorways. It has even been deployed to stop the scourge of crisp flavouring sticking to fingers.
Leveraging the Buzz
Detecting the product’s new life online, executives at the multinational enhanced the tricks by asking their own scientists to test them and letting the content creators in on the results.
Claims that Vaseline reduced the sting of chili on the mouth were validated. Similarly supported were ideas it could extend fragrance and rejuvenate purses. Suggestions it could whiten teeth or make eyelashes longer were debunked.
The ‘Digital Ear’ Approach
Billboards and TV ads would once have dominated Unilever’s advertising drive. However, this online trend has helped convince executives to ramp up funding for content creators.
This monitoring of online platforms to inform business strategy has been dubbed “social listening”. Unilever's CEO, freshly instated, has suggested it is aiming to spend half of its colossal advertising budget on social media content.
Evolving With Audience Behavior
Selina Sykes, who is spearheading the social media effort, said the company was just evolving with contemporary approaches of reaching consumers. She said interacting online “without dampening the fun” was paramount.
“How can companies join discussions credibly? This remains our core objective as brands, since the era of community gossip and discussing household products.
“The trend is shifting from a broadcast model, where we would just broadcast out … Now it’s many conversations, various groups. The evolution of platform algorithms means that these communities feel niche, yet they are vast.
“If you can make sure your brand is shared by other people, mentioned by individuals, that is how you can build trust and relevance. Content makers are key. We are expanding this endorsement system.”
A Revolutionary Change in Media
This plan mirrors dramatic transformations occurring in how media is consumed, with younger consumers devoting greater hours to digital networks than television, magazines or radio.
The transition is visible in falling revenues for TV and print advertising. Across Britain, commercial funding for leading TV channels have dropped substantially in actual value since the end of the last decade.
Influencer Marketing Expansion
It also reflects a media convergence as brands effectively act as media producers, linking up with hundreds of content creators to promote their goods.
Leon Harlow said: “Clearly, there is a migration of viewers out of certain traditional media outlets and they are dedicating far more hours to social platforms like Instagram, TikTok and YouTube than they are consuming linear broadcasts or printed matter.
“Numerous corporations inform us consumers have more faith in suggestions from the creators they engage with more than they trust ads. That’s a consistent trend.”
He noted companies can reduce costs by investing in creators over large-scale legacy ad buys, which also enables easier content adjustment to test effectiveness.
This strategy is expanding. Marketing investment on influencer marketing is growing fourfold quicker than total media spending. Stateside, it has over doubled since 2021 and is forecast to attain multi-billion dollar sums in 2025.
TV's Lasting Role
Regardless of the massive shift, experts said they believed television commercials still played a key part to play, as TV channels continued to possess the influence to drive countrywide discourse.
She added: “Among the most effective advertising investments is still the Super Bowl. It’s not about those broadcasters saying: ‘Oh, we’re not relevant any more.’ It concerns who commands eyeballs … I believe there is absolutely a role for them.”
